Corning, HCT and "By A Black Hand"
Hickory Daily Record
written by Sherrell D. McMillan
HICKORY, N.C. - Did you know that Henry Sampson was the first African-American to earn a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering in the United States? Or that Otis Boykins, an African-American from Dallas, Texas, invented a control unit for the pacemaker, along with 25 other electronic devices?
Thanks to Corning Cable Systems, the Hickory chapter of the Corning Society of Black Professionals (SBP) and the Hickory Community Theatre (HCT), a group of theater-goers in Hickory do.
Corning and HCT sponsored two performances of "By a Black Hand," a hip-hop musical telling the story of African-American influence and innovation in the United States. The play was presented by the Teen Theatre Ensemble of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company.
“We chose to have the company come to perform “By a Black Hand” because of how it speaks to people about finding their own history and because of the energy with which it is performed, “said John Rambo, Managing Director of HCT. “This was a terrific partnership and the Corning SBP members took the scope of the project farther than it ever would have gone on its own.”
