In 1992 Idris Ackamoor and Larry Leon Hamlin had a dinner meeting. As they broke bread together Idris pitched his idea of a series dedicated to performance art. Larry embraced the idea and the New Performance in Black Theatre Series was born! Premiering at the 1993 Festival (and ongoing since then) the series has featured a "who's who" of cutting-edge performers including Pearl Cleage, Ntozake Shange, Roger Guenveur Smith, Will Power, the late Sekou Sundiata, Marc Bamuthi Joseph and of course Rhodesssa Jones and Series curator Idris Ackamoor. The New Performance in Black Theatre Series is a Festival favorite and presents “not to be missed” performance rituals that nurture the soul and rock the body!
